worried
« on: August 16, 2012, 04:11:49 PM »
Hey guys

I have had jobs in the past but it seems I havent held one down for more than six months, I either end up quitting through stress or have six month contracts that could turn to a year contract end and them not resigning for one reason or another, or im asked to resign rather than be fired because i cant meet the targets.....

I am now once again after uni looking for employment and am terrified the same is going to continue, I dont seem to cope well in the jobs I have experience in which is office jobs, they seem too stressful for me... Thing is I have a psychical disability and last time I worked in other jobs such as retail my leg was in agony at night.....so I am not sure what other jobs I can do that dont require me being on my feet for long periods of time. for example I couldnt be a cashier as all the supermarkets and shops I have asked said they need their employees to be flexible and take on all the jobs they cant be only be a cashier

so I just dont know what to do, I am applying for office jobs but I dont think I can mentally handle the stress.....

Hi Laura,

What did you study at uni? Is there any particular area of office work you are interested in, which you could perhaps specialise in?
I'm wondering whether something that is office-based, but not as hectic, would be better for you - ie not office admin or office support, but a more 'specialised' role.

I'm afraid I'm not very knowledgeable about careers, but have you considered seeing a careers counsellor? I don't know how many of these are around or the cost involved, but this may be an option?

It doesn't seem right that companies ask you to resign 'because you can't meet the targets'... Surely they should be working with you to help you?
And it seems outrageous that a supermarket or shop won't hire someone with a disability and won't make a space for them in their staff, and give them jobs according to their abilities... maybe I am naive but it seems wrong that they turned you away?

I was fairly similar after I left uni - my first job lasted 3 months, then the next one, 5 months, etc etc - you are not alone! I know how it feels.
Hang in there is all I can say, keep persevering. I know it's tough, and you must be feeling despondent. But try to keep trucking.

Perhaps, if you are keen, see whether any charities in your area are hiring. The work will be office-based but probably different to usual commercial environments?
I get the feeling they are far more accommodating.
For example, I would quite like to work for a mental health charity, or a women's rights charity, because these are close to my heart.

I studied media and writing at university but there's little about at the moment in that area and i just want any job at the moment until i decide what it is I want to do.

I have looked into non stressful office jobs but they dont exist all have stressful targets to meet or daily reports on employees etc

I have seen careers guides all they do is ask me what i want to do and suggest jobs that i cant maintain or would have to do yet more training to get into I have had enough education and its stressing me out.

employers only care about hitting the targets and running the business they do not care about making space and adjusting for less able staff its a battle to get them to take me on in the first place I am a disabled person with depression, who is of child baring age lol im a triple dislike
