Brits are being urged to stay indoors this weekend as a 20C mini-heatwave sends the mercury soaring higher than in Greece.  Warm weather, sunny skies, and clear weather will cover most of the UK this weekend as we near the end of two weeks in lockdown because of the coronavirus pandemic.  Temperatures will feel warmer than recently, though turning windy in the west.  On Sunday, it will again be a dry day with plenty of warm sunshine in the east.  But Brits must heed the social distancing advice reiterated by PM Boris Johnson, Health Secretary Matt Hancock and NHS chiefs on Friday and resist the urge to go on outdoor trips or picnics.  Met Office spokeswoman Bonnie Diamond told the Standard: "As we head towards the weekend it's going to get warmer.  On Saturday we're seeing a southerly wind flow develop across the UK and that's going to bring higher temperatures.  "There will be some showers and rain in places, but this is mostly confined to the far North of Scotland.  Everywhere else is going to be dry with some hazy sunshine."

The warm weather is forecast to stay across the UK on Sunday however for some areas conditions will be cloudier, in particular across Northern Ireland and Scotland earlier in the day.  Ms. Diamond told the Standard: "Top temperatures on Saturday look to be around 14C or 15C and then on Sunday we're going to get another pulse of warmth, another dry day and more sunshine.  Temperatures range quite widely in the mid-teens with highs of possibly 19C or 20C in a few spots.  It's also getting quite breezy on Sunday but it is still going to feel warm."

These temperatures will make the UK hotter than both Greece and Portugal this weekend.  At Friday's Downing Street press briefing, England's chief nursing officer, Ruth May, urged people to think of two nurses who died after contracting coronavirus and "stay home for them".  Areema Nasreen and Aimee O'Rourke, both mothers of three children, died alongside two healthcare assistants, it was announced on Friday.  Ms. May, speaking at the daily Downing Street press conference, said: "This weekend is going to be very warm and it will be very tempting to go out and enjoy those summer rays.  "But please, I ask you to remember Aimee and Areema. Please stay at home for them."

She added: "I worry that there's going to be more and I want to honour them today and recognise their service."

Met Office five-day forecast

Saturday:  Any fog in the south clearing then many southern areas turning sunnier and quite warm.  Further north, rather cloudy with odd light showers, rain slow to clear the far north.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:  Bright, warm but breezy for many on Sunday.  Rain moving east, largely clearing Monday morning followed by sunshine and showers.  Bright for most Tuesday; wind and rain in the northwest.
